- Intumescent paint works similarly to cementitious fireproofing. It is sprayed as a thin layer to the steel and it also has a watertight seal, preventing corrosion of the metal. When more layers are sprayed, it takes a longer time to burn the paint in the case of a fire. If a fire were to occur, the heat reacts with the paint, and it swells up to protect the steel underneath. Intumescent paint is easier to apply than cementitious paint and appears better if the beams are staying exposed for decorating purposes as well.
